Plane Carrying 89 People Arrives Nose First On The Tarmac After Landing Gear Failure

Passengers on board a flight in Myanmar had a bumpy landing on Sunday after the plane was forced to touch down without the use of its front wheel.

The Myanmar National Airlines flight landed safely at Mandalay airport on Sunday after its landing gear failed, bringing the aircraft to rest on its nose.

The airline said in a statement on its Facebook page that flight UB103 came from Yangon and the pilot flew around the air traffic control tower twice in order for staff to check if the landing gear had been activated before the decision was made to make an emergency landing. The statement also said the pilot followed emergency procedures and dumped extra fuel before attempting to land.

Videos shared with Reuters showed smoke rising from under the seats of the aircraft shortly after landing. Passengers scrambled to evacuate as instructions were given over the speaker system.

Emergency services were seen attending to the Embraer 190 XYAGQ aircraft with its nose on tarmac. Local media said no injuries were reported on the flight carrying 82 passengers and seven crew members.

Everyone on the plane, operated by Miami Air, is alive and accounted for, with 21 people treated for minor injuries.

A marine unit responded to assist. The plane was not submerged.

Captain Michael Connor, of NAS Jacksonville, acknowledged that it could have been much worse and described the landing as a “miracle”

“We could be talking about a different story this evening,” he told reporters.

It is not known how long it will take to remove the plane from the river, but Capt Connor said the landing gear appeared to be resting on the river bed, making it unlikely for the aircraft to float away.

Navy security and emergency response personnel were on the scene and monitoring the situation, with family members who were expecting the arrival of passengers instructed to stand by.
